Congress needs to hear from us.
Mixed reactions permeate throughout the world as news spreads of Osama Bin Laden’s killing at the hands of U.S. forces. Bin Laden’s capture had long been one of the three initial reasons for war in Afghanistan, along with destroying al Qaeda, and removing the Taliban.
Now, nearly ten years later, bin Laden has been killed, no more than 50-100 al Qaeda members are in Afghanistan according to CIA Director Leon Panetta, and the Taliban have been overthrown.
It’s time to make the call.
1. Call your Senators and Representative today at (202) 224-3121 and demand: Bring the Troops Home from Afghanistan!
2. Tell us how your call went by answering these quick questions.
Here at Peace Action, we have known since the beginning that invading and occupying Afghanistan would not keep our country safer, would drain our national resources, and would destroy lives. Sure enough, since 2001, we’ve spent over $400 billion dollars on the war to date (not including long-term costs) and lost thousands of U.S. lives. Our national security rests on meeting human needs, not occupying countries that at one time harbored Bin Laden and his followers.
We have always had good reasons to bring the troops home. If our reasons weren’t good enough for the war hawks in Congress before, now, by their own standards, the time has come.
Over the next few weeks, President Obama will be making his decision on troop deployments in Afghanistan. Over the next month, we will be provide more and more ways to influence his decision for the better. But first, we must make our voices heard in Congress.
