Washington, D.C. — February 28, 2017 — In response to President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, Jon Rainwater, executive director of the United States’ largest grassroots peace organization, Peace Action, released the following statement:

“President Trump used his first address to Congress to double down on some of the most dangerous parts of his agenda. From his plan to escalate U.S. military involvement in the endless wars raging in the Middle East, to his plan to shut our doors to refugees fleeing those same conflicts, Trump’s speech underlined the heartless and profoundly counterproductive nature of his foreign policy.

“In pledging to ‘demolish and destroy ISIS,’ likely by sending more American soldiers into the fray, Trump made clear that he sees violent extremism as something that can be stomped out through brute military force. The past decade and a half suggest otherwise.

“Showering praise on Lockheed Martin and its F-35 boondoggle of a fighter jet, Trump’s speech made it clear who he’s working for. While Trump claims he’s serious about great negotiation, his plan to pillage funds from the State Department and foreign aid to to feed the insatiable Pentagon budget says otherwise. While Trump purports to be putting Americans first, his plans to line the arms industry’s pockets by cutting programs like healthcare that provide real security to American families says otherwise.

“As if the speech alone wasn’t bad enough, applause from some members of Congress in response to some of the worst ideas espoused serves as a grim reminder of the need to demand our elected officials stand up to the madness.”
